History of Ribera del Duero wines

The most characteristic grape variety is tempranillo, generically called Tinta del País, which constitutes more than 90% of the production. For a wine to be eligible for the appellation of origin must include at least 75% of Tempranillo in its elaboration. In total, not less than 95% of the grape must be Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Garnacha and Albillo grapes are allowed but in small quantities.
The D.O Ribera del Duero is characterized by its river, El Duero. This river connects more than 100 villages stretched along a 120 km long wine belt. The climate of the Ribera del Duero is characterized by moderate-low rainfall (450 mm of rain per year), which, together with its dry summers (40ºC) and long and rigorous winters (-18ºC), with marked thermal fluctuations long of the seasons, frame it within a Mediterranean climate.
