Where is Verdil wine made?
The white grape variety Verdil is native to DO Valencia, especially the region of Clariano, although it is also recovering in some areas of Alicante and Murcia. Formerly Valencia's white wine with Verdil was basically in bulk. Now it is always carried out in a coupage with some other variety, such as Chardonnay or Moscatel, in order to contribute to them a liveliness and outstanding fruitiness.
Almost extinct, a few Valencian wineries are recovering this variety that is planted in areas with an average altitude of 700 meters. A difficult but grateful grape that poses a health problem by not withstanding the humidity.
The clusters are medium to large, conical in shape and well compacted. The berries are a golden yellow and spherical. Early grape, usually harvested in hours of little sun, nocturnal harvest, at the end of August. They do not have a very high alcohol rating.
The wines with the Verdil white grape variety are characterized by a fruity character, with an outstanding apple and pear, and the high acidity that gives it a lot of freshness, very citric. When made with the very young grape, the wine will be characterized by a lively acidity. By contrast, when the white wine with Verdil is made with the ripe grape will have a greater coloration and will be more tender, sweeter.
The white wines with Verdil are not easy to elaborate because this white grape has a marked oxidative tendency; So much will have to be controlled.
This white grape variety Verdil is also known as Verdoncho de Valencia, Verdeja (often mistaken for the typical Verdejo grape of Rueda) and Verdereta.
