Next destination: A winery in Mallorca!

The days are getting longer, the temperatures are rising and the ice cream parlors are open again, in short: summer is here! So it’s high time to start planning your summer vacation. The wine-growing region of Mallorca

Mallorca has long been known among wine lovers for more than just beaches, water and fun. Because the island, which belongs to the Balearic Islands, is home to two Denominaciones de Origen (Binissalem and Pla i Llevant) and several locally distinguished regions on its approximately 3,640 km². Wine is currently being grown by around 70 winegrowers on Mallorca.

The prevailing climate on the island is particularly suitable for wine growing: the mountains of the Tramuntana protect against cold north winds, while the dry summers and not too cold winters in combination with calcareous soils create a favorable microclimate. All the better, because since the space available to winegrowers on an island is limited, Mallorca has to focus on quality instead of quantity.

That’s why the island is always worth a visit: Many of the wineries only sell their wine on the island and the fine wines are hard to come by outside of Mallorca.

DO Binissalem and her wine

Heart of the wine-growing region is clearly the Denominación de Origen Binissalem.

The region, only 28 km from Palma de Mallorca, is made up of the municipalities of Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Binissalem, Santa Eugènia and Sencelles, which are connected by the so-called “Wine Route” (“Ruta del Vino”).

Most important grape varieties are Manto Negro (red, autochthonous grape), Tempranillo, Tinto Fino and Cencibel.

D.O. Binissalem wineries are small and medium-sized wineries with a family tradition, dedicated not only to technology, staff and training, but also to local grape varieties.

This is how unique wines with a high level of quality are created, which are recognized nationally and internationally.

Like the Bodega Ribas, for example, which can trace its history back to 1711 and touches us with its familiarity. Or the Bodega José L. Ferrer, which was founded in 1931 and is therefore one of the oldest industrial wineries in Mallorca.

A visit to the D.O. is particularly worthwhile in the first two weeks of September, when the harvest is celebrated with the “Festa de Vermar”. As well as enjoying the exquisite young wine, there are a range of other fun to whimsical activities such as grape fights, grape treading, al fresco dining and traditional noodle eating.

A wine tour through Mallorca

Just remember that a visit, as well as a wine tasting, must be pre-booked at most wineries.

We find the initiative of the “Mallorca Wine Express” particularly charming: here you can visit various wineries and vineyards on a train that gives you a wonderful Hogwarts feeling. Here too, of course, the tasting of red wines from Mallorca and local tapas is not neglected.

Landscapes, wine and winery

Do you prefer something sportier? No problem, because on Mallorca you can combine hiking trails with wine tasting.

You can explore the beautiful landscape on foot, which produces the wonderful drop of Mallorcan red wine that you have more than earned after hiking.

As you can see, the island of Mallorca has something for everyone with its wineries, landscape and culinary and cultural wealth.
