Wine characteristics
Once the fruit has been selected, the production is based on the de-stemming of the bunches and a gentle crushing of the grapes to subsequently carry out the alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation.
The wine is aged in new and second-year barrels of medium-toasted American white oak (Ohio) and French oak for 30 months, with a racking every 6 months to facilitate natural clarification. Subsequently it remains in the bottle for 36 months for its refinement
Elegant, tasty and very aromatic wine, ripe tannins
Bodegas Franco-Españolas was born in 1890 as the union between France and Spain at a peak in Rioja, when the French came to the region trying to replace their vineyards devastated by phylloxera disease. It was the origin of the "fine Rioja wines".
All this led Frederick Anglade Saurat, a native of Bordeaux, to found Bodegas Franco-Españolas in 1890. The first harvest, a year later, results in the winery's icon wines: Diamante and Estilo Burgundy. This was renamed Rioja Bordón in the 50s, and in 2017 it was redesigned as Bordón.
In 1920, fifteen years after Anglade's death, the French sold their shares and the winery became entirely Spanish. King Alfonso XIII visits the winery in 1903 and in 1925. Ernest Hemingway will do so in 1956.
The end of the Dry Law in the USA in 1933 and the resurgence of the Regulatory Council in 1953 will give a boost to the exports of Rioja wines. Franco-Spanish has a presence in large European cities, in addition to Caracas, Buenos Aires, Havana and New York. 1964 is an excellent vintage, perhaps the best of the century.
It belongs to the DO Rioja, a name that dates back to the end of the 19th century, but was not officially formed until 1925. The area that houses this designation of origin covers the autonomous communities of Rioja and the Basque Country.
The grapes produced in this denomination are: Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo, Graciano and Maturana Tinta.
The wines of this appellation are characterized by being fresh, aromatic wines with an excellent vessel and above all they are very balanced wines.
